Working on canvas gives me the spatial freedom to think expansively. As I paint, there is a continual process of images being removed, regrouped, or overlaid to correct the balance between the image and the negative space. Often I leave the under layers exposed, as a visual map of my course. In other pieces, the background is quite bare to invoke an orderly tension. There is an influence from my theater experience in all my paintings; color as a main element to create a visual drama, images coming out of darkness, and movement. I continue to explore ways of creating spatial expression and controlled motion using identifiable, organic, and simple forms in a personal setting.
